The 2015-16 season served as the "Big Bang" for Arizona State University hockey, marking its monumental transition from an ACHA club powerhouse to a legitimate NCAA Division I program. Led by head coach Greg Powers, the Sun Devils navigated a unique hybrid schedule that pitted them against established DI giants as well as top-tier club teams.
The program officially entered the history books on October 9, 2015, when they played their first-ever NCAA Division I game against #10 Quinnipiac. Although they suffered a 5-0 loss, they didn't have to wait long for redemption. Just one day later, the Sun Devils secured their first DI victory by defeating Alaska Fairbanks 2-1 in the Kendall V Hockey Classic. During that historic win, freshman Liam Norris etched his name into ASU lore by scoring the program’s first-ever NCAA goal, a moment that signaled the Sun Devils were ready to compete with the best. On the ice, the roster was a gritty mix of players from the 2014 ACHA National Championship squad and a new wave of DI recruits.
Freshman Jordan Masters emerged as the offensive catalyst, leading the team in goals (8), assists (14), and total points (22). Between the pipes, the goaltending tandem of Robert Levin and David Jacobson shared the workload, combining for five wins throughout the grueling schedule. While the team finished with a humble 5-22-2 record against NCAA opponents, the season was viewed as a massive developmental success.
